While filming the second episode of the new series “Alive”, my guest was Nora Dunn, aka ‘The Professional Hobo‘
Nora has been traveling the world for the past three years with no fixed address. I recently came across her blog with the help of mentor, Matt Thoren. Along with featuring her in the upcoming episode, ‘Alive-New Zealand’, I decided to get to the bottom of a couple of terms. This travel hacker is a Cinderella Story in the making.

Do you have a better term? Can you define it? Up next, the ultimate contest….future post to come.

You guys are so funny. The true hack is Aaron’s beer being 9.0. Cant wait to see the show!
Hi Guys-
It is great to see these different people on the web. What your doing is great and who is next? I agree, Nora is a master of terms, but there needs to be a new one ‘coined’.
Thanks for showing me a great time in New Zealand Aaron, and I can’t wait to see the episode. I forgot we even shot this interview, while getting blottoed in Auckland! 9.0 beer or not, I felt no pain by the end of the afternoon! (smiles)
You guys are really funny! You should have called it beer hacking. This is really good stuff, keep it up Aaron!
Thanks Mark, up next is…. Chris G.
Always my pleasure, we still need to get to the bottom of this term. I have the perfect idea, stay tuned!
Hi Aaron — Look forward to seeing the episode. Wish I could have flown down to join you guys! According to an Intrepid tour guide I know, the term “flashpacker” was invented by an Australian newspaper travel editor or writer to refer to people who like to travel backpacker style, but who have more money and want to stay in nicer accomodations. For example, when my wife and I went to Vietnam, we took the overnight buses to get everywhere (very cheap!) and ate lots of street food, sitting outside on the sidewalk with average Vietnamese people — but then we stayed in 3-star hotels, typically. Wikipedia says the term means backpacking with flash, having more money to spend on fun activities, eat and sleep at nice places, or to carry lots of gadgets around, as Nora said.
Love the term “flashhacker”! No idea what it might mean, but I’m sure you can do something cool with it!
Hey Aaron:
Where was this filmed? Looks familiar.
Did you ever make it by Mexicali Fresh in Auckland?
Hey Dave-
This was in Downtown Auclkand and as much as I would love to tell you where, I am not sure. We were unable to make it over there, but thanks for the reminder. I am looking to go back soon, I will make sure someone is in touch with them.
Hi Carl-
We had a great time! I was hoping you would leave your two cents on here, as its more like two dollars
I am running another post now, perhaps you can help get to the bottom of this. Most people are starting to realize, terms arent really my thing. That said, it would be nice to be able to properly describe this type of travel.
Hey Dave,
Looks like that was filmed in Vulcan lane at a pub called O’Carrols
