Follow Me Around The World, Without A Bag

Follow me as I attempt to be one of the few people in history to go around the world without a bag, documented. 8 countries, 4 equator crossings, 50 days, 0 bags.

I have yet to travel around the world in one shot and I have yet to attempt to do it, without a bag. Adding to my bucket list, this is what travel is all about!

I will attempt to be one of the few people in history to go around the world without a bag. Rolf Potts, famous author of Vagabonding just completed his ‘No Baggage Challenge’ (www.rtwblog.com). I sat down with Rolf, while filming my travel show series. He is the legend behind backpacking and if he can go around without a bag, I had to see if I could do it as well.

If you are tired of paying bag fees, want a new perspective on travel, or just want to live vicariously through me, now you can. With all of the bag fees these days, its time to put things in perspective. Travel hacking is about saving money, time, and is considered the streets smarts of travel. Going around the world and realizing what you need in life and don’t, is a great way to incorporate travel hacking. Everyone should have a travel bucket list. Although most think it cant be done in this day an age of higher travel cost, I would disagree. In fact, I plan to cross off a dozen of those items on my bucket list while I go through 8 countries in 50 days, without a bag.

I look forward to your support!

Travel Hack Your Way To Chairman Club Status.

Travel Hack of the Century

If I told you that you could own the airways with the ultimate status on US Airways and it would only cost you $3,500 would you do it? What if you could do it in 3 weeks?

Its called a “Mileage Run”. If you saw the last post I did “Airlines Miles Gigolo” and didnt do it, here is another chance.

THIS IS CLEARLY MY HACK OF THE CENTURY. By far the best hack I have seen to date for the amount of money spent.

This is the link for the current promotion released early this morning.
US Airways

Here is the cliff note version. Fly routes on the above checklist and you will move up in status for every 4 items you check off. Here is how I am going to become the highest of the members and also Star Alliance GOLD.

My Account has about 5,000 miles in it now. I need about 20,000 for the first of 4 levels on the preferred list.

My routes with example dates
1-Omaha to Boston 7/15
2-Boston to NYC 7/15
3-NYC to Boston 7/16
4-Boston to Platsburg, NY 7/16
5-Platsburg, NY to Philly 7/16
6-Philly to Alaska 7/17
Total miles 6,345 and total cost $1253
7-Alaska to Phx 7/22
8-Phx to Jamaca 7/23
9-Jamaca to Charlotte 7/28
10-Charlotte to Melborne 7/29
11-Melborne to Charlotte 8/1
12-Charlotte to Baton Rouge 8/2
13-Baton Rouge to Charlotte 8/3
Total Miles 8,995 total cost 1,294.20
14-Charlotte to Los Cabos 8/4
15-Los Cabos to LAX 8/8
16-LAX to Hawaii 8/9
Total Miles 6,874 total cost 1,000
Grand Total in Miles 22,214 and cost is 3547.20

Remember I had 5,000 to start. With the addition of the above miles I earn the first level and with the 16 legs, I become eligible for 3 levels. Putting me at the cream of the crop.

So is it worth it? Lets see, I now get all of the following; (straight from the US Airways Website)

Gaining World Class Skills-Morocco

I came to the understanding recently when an old friend suggested that not all adventure had to be adrenaline based. It was my goal to flashpack through Morocco, that allowed me to understand what she meant. The culture shock of landing in Casablanca at 11pm and attempting to make your way to a hotel, in the middle of a Medina, is enough to scare the living #&%$ out of most. To then attempt to set out for a late night drink, in a predominantly Muslim Country, puts new meaning on the song, ‘Beer For My Horses’. Not only did I find the local brew, I managed to polish up on my negotiating skills, study cobra charming, uncover the culture behind the knock offs, and challenge my street smarts. If your a designer, it will give you a worldly view, if your in sales, it will certainly polish your closing ratio, if your an armchair traveler, it will confirm how comfortable your chair really is.

The resentment I had behind each instance I was tricked, was weakened by the strength of the world class skills I have added to my belt. Here is a taste of this bizarre world that I backpacked through in 5 days with a couple of my closest calls. Sometimes, backpacking is your only option, especially off the beaten path. It once again, reinforced that my decision to live each day to the fullest, was the right thing to do. When you cant use the spoken language to understand someone, you begin to read body language. The eyes, hands, and awkward movements, all become a 6th sense. The highest institution couldn’t teach me what I learned in 5 days on how to read people, ESPECIALLY THE SNAKES. All puns aside, it is a true world class skill.

Meeting My Match – Adventure Capital Of The World – New Zealand

We all know, I am not good with words, so I am pleased to present, “Alive-New Zealand”.
I have met my match along with many incredible people, who call themselves Kiwi’s. Its the combination of the Maori Culture, Kiwi’s, and Adventure, that left me in bed with an overdose of DOPAMINE.

Alive-New Zealand

There are so many ways to explore New Zealand. As most of you know, my thing is incorporating as much as I can in a short amount of time. I found it easier in a tighter economy to travel with less days and use the tools of travel hacking to see the world. I flew into Auckland and spent most of my time in Rotorua. Its home to some of the Worlds highest, tallest, and only. I realize that not everyone can afford to do all the things I feature, but its not about how many, just which ones. You have so many adventures to pick from in Rotorua that if you cant travel the South Island, that is fine. Its more important to see something than nothing, right? You can hack this trip in 5 days and incorporate the weekend so you use less vacation days. If you fly Air New Zealand from LAX, you can get a 1 to 1 ratio on the miles with United. There are many other options as well but you will at least earn enough for a one way domestic ticket! Hows that for an incentive?

Learning to Charm a Cobra

While filming in Morocco, I faced one of my biggest fears in the eyes. Snakes! Here is the clip of my training process with the Berber Tribe. The Cameraman wasnt as lucky as me…

When your traveling around the world, culture shock will help you deal with your fears. I have been tackling them on each trip and this is yet another example.

Side Note- The recent winner of the Nomads Contest is Maureen Schreyer.(www.so5thavenue.com) Her post and website is a great example of the courage it takes to get up and travel. Stay tuned for details on her trip and stay at Nomads.

New Zealands only Freefall Xtreme at Agroventures in Rotorua
Here is the scoop:
My last post was a random discussion about the term ‘flashpacking’ and how it applies to my recent travels. I had a chance to stay at my FIRST hostel, Nomads in New Zealand. I am told that Nomads, is one of the nicer hostels in the world. After my recent stay, I have no complaints. My normal stay for hotels have been similar to Novotel. My recent trip to New Zealand, introduced me to Nomads where I caught up with Nora Dunn, a hostel guru. This ‘flashpacking’ hostel has a lot to offer and its a chain I am going to highly recommend, if that’s your thing. I always like gifts but only promote things I believe in. That said, here you go…

I was given 3 bed hopper passes and 3 mad cards from Nomads and there wonderful staff. Total value of $447 US DOLLARS. I am giving them away to one winner and your two friends. It allows you to stay at any of the Nomads in New Zealand for a total of 5 days and also gives you around $1000 dollars each in discounted activities. It is for 5 nights each so you will have plenty of time to tell me all about it.
Notes:
-This was my first hostel and any age group can stay here.
-They are located throughout New Zealand, so you can try a couple
-This is ideal for a week long trip. If you only have a week vacation to use, get in the two weekends before and after the week. You can see plenty.
-Your trip must be before MAY 15, 2010 and here is why.
I am going to feature your review (yes, you must submit a review :) ) on my blog and incorporate it in the new nationally syndicated television series “Alive“, based on Adventure Aaron. The show is about living life to the fullest, today, not 6 months from now. Its about taking the short vacation time you may have and using it to the fullest. I uncover the culture of travel hacking and show you how to get unforgettable memories from unconventional travel. Most of the time, making the decision to travel is the hardest part. For me, it has always been about taking one second to make the decision and the rest of your life to make it right. Whatever you decide to do, chances are you will still be fixing it down the road. Plus our season airs in mid May and we want to hear about your trip!

What we are looking for (PRODUCTION AND MYSELF):
NOTHING! JUST TELL US WHY YOU CAN GO, HOW YOU TALKED YOUR FRIENDS INTO DOING THE SAME THING, AND HOW YOU CAN RELATE TO BEING ‘ALIVE’.

Contest Rules:
1-Leave a comment below on why you want to go to New Zealand, who you will be bringing, adventures you want to do, and dates you plan on going.
2-Subscribe to this blog (its free and I donate a dollar to charity!)
3-Once your trip is over, send in a review that I can feature.
4-If you can only go alone, its OK.

Notice that I don’t ask for too many details on where you will be going. I try not to read the guidebooks or research too much before my trips. Similar to a comment I recently heard Rolf Potts make, I think the country needs to be able to take control of the trip. If its too planned, your trip may be on the beaten path. The voting will end April 1st, 2010, so lets see what you got…

Coming To Terms With The ‘Professional Hobo’

While filming the second episode of the new series “Alive”, my guest was Nora Dunn, aka ‘The Professional Hobo
Nora has been traveling the world for the past three years with no fixed address. I recently came across her blog with the help of mentor, Matt Thoren. Along with featuring her in the upcoming episode, ‘Alive-New Zealand’, I decided to get to the bottom of a couple of terms. This travel hacker is a Cinderella Story in the making.
